Project play semester 1 wrap-up

Just a few comments on this Project play semester one: this was outside my comfort zone but it's good to be outside that zone sometimes! It is fun to try new things so I am looking forward to the next semester. Probably the hardest part for me is to express myself so publicly. Good thing is not too many people are probably reading this! I think I had the most fun with the Flickr exercise.

WikiWiki

Week 9 of Project play is all about Wikis. I did learn a couple to things-- I had no idea the term wiki came from the Hawaiian language. I contributed a couple things to the Project play wiki. I've also added some things to our Tech Services wiki, which is connected to our Tech Services homepage on the intranet.

Tagging

Back from vacation, sigh. So much pretty scenery and good wine but back to reality this week. Week 8 assignment on ProjectPlay is about tagging which is basically like what I do for a living-- assigning subject headings! The whole thing of tag clouds I'm not sure if I like-- it just looks awfully messy. Oh well, that's what this project is all about-- getting out of your comfort zone.

Day before vacation

I added my LibraryThing to this blog. On vacation I will hopefully be reading Love in the time of cholera. I've always wanted to read it. I think it's being made into a movie, too. I am rather half-heartedly reading Strawberry fields. It's probably one of those books that you just have to keep pushing on, but there are so many good books and so little time! See you all in a week or so.

Where we were this past weekend-- visiting my brother and his wife. I downloaded this picture from Flickr, a pretty cool site. In response to DaVinci's question, this photo is of Duluth, Minnesota. It is beautiful there. Cold in winter, though!

RSS feeds

I forgot to comment on Week 3 of Project Play-- I did subscribe to 10 RSS feeds. I'm not sure how much I will really check those, though. I have an IGoogle thing so I link things that I want to keep up with on that.

What I am currently reading

I have a list of books I've read or currently reading on the right of my blog. The book I am reading now is How Starbucks saved my life which is the account by Michael Gates Gill of how he lost his high-powered advertising job in New York and begins working at a Starbucks. Overall, I like it, though he does seem to name-drop a lot but hey, if I had met Hemingway, I would do the same! Someone asked me how I liked the book Water for elephants. I'd have to say it was one of the best books I've read lately. I loved reading about the circus and the people in it. Parts of the book will make you laugh out loud (at least I did!). But other parts will make you dread what is coming next. Thoroughly worthwhile read. Which brings me to our current assignment to invite comments-- have you read a good book lately or do you have any questions regarding my list of books?

Post wedding

This past weekend we were all consumed with my daughter Rachel serving as maid of honor at her friend Jenny's wedding. It was a beautiful wedding but hot. I hope to post a picture soon. This weekend we are off to St. Louis area to visit my sister-in-law. October is proving to be a busy month!

From the police blotter...

Okay, I couldn't even make this up. This was in our local paper in the police blotter section : Animal: A woman living in the 2100 block of S***** Drive reported that a fox was curled up on a patio chair and was refusing to leave. When she tried to chase it away it simply moved to a different chair and went back to sleep.

Eat an apple

Did you know that today is the birth anniversary of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed (1774-1845)? To celebrate I am eating candy, heh heh. Later on I will eat an apple in memory of him.

Welcome to my blog

This is my first blog and first posting. Hah, now I have writer's block. I am in week 2 of Project Play and enjoying it so far.
